Station Feed Licence

Station Feed Licence 1.0 · in force · wording last updated 7 November 2026
In short

This summary helps you read the licence. It has no legal force of its own. The binding text follows it.

  • You may use the feed for your own private use only: on your own screens, in your own programs and files, for non-profit research or teaching, for no money and for no business.
  • You may show others counts and charts that hold no positions, tracks or messages, with our credit.
  • You may not pass the feed on in any form, paid or free, rebuild it bit by bit, use it for a business or try to find our stations.
  • Wherever others see the feed or a result from it, this credit is shown: AIS data from Gangway AIS (gangwayais.com), Station Feed Licence 1.0
  • Your right to the data ends 30 days after your key ends. You delete it by then.
  • Breaking the passing-on rules ends your key for good.

1. What this licence covers

This licence governs the station feed: every message, frame, sentence, track and answer we deliver through a station feed key, by any of our interfaces, live or from our history. Every part of it is covered too. We call this the Feed.

The Feed comes to you because your station sends to us under the Station Agreement. That agreement decides when your account has a key. This licence decides what you may do with what the key delivers.

Parts of the Feed that a frame marks with another licence, for example an open government licence, stay under that licence for that part. Where you take a part under its own licence, you take on that licence's conditions and its credit. Everything else in the Feed is under this licence. So is the Feed as a whole as a collection.

2. Definitions

3. What we allow

As long as you keep to section 4 and your key is active, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right, free of charge, to:

That is all. Any right not written here is ours. More, including commercial use, is available only under a paid Gangway plan that includes it or a separate written agreement signed by us.

4. What you may not do

4.1 No commercial use

You may not put the Feed or anything made from it to commercial use. A Result shown with our credit on a page that earns money, for example through advertising, counts as commercial use.

4.2 No passing on

You may not pass on the Feed. In particular not:

4.3 No relay of the key

Only you use your key and only from equipment you control or a helper's equipment under section 5. Nobody else may receive the Feed through your key, your connection or a program you run for them.

4.4 No rebuilding

You may not take many small parts of the Feed, through any route, in a way that adds up to a substantial part of it. You may not publish Results so fine in place or time that positions or tracks can be read back from them.

4.5 Programs and models

You may use the Feed to test or train a program or model for your private use. The program or model must not be able to give back positions, tracks or messages from the Feed and must not be given to anyone else. A program or model that does either counts as the Feed itself.

4.6 No finding our stations

You may not use the Feed, or combine it with other data, to work out where our stations are, who runs them or which station heard what.

4.7 No tracking of people

You may not use the Feed to watch, follow, harass or track people.

4.8 No changing the Feed and passing it as ours

You may not change what the Feed says and present the result as Gangway AIS data.

5. Who else may handle the Feed

6. Credit

Wherever the Feed or a Result can be seen by others, on a screen, a map, a picture or a document, you show this credit:
